What are your 'top 5' favorite colors? If you're like me this list probably changes often. Personally, pink and gray have always remained at the top, but the others tend to switch from time to time. Orange has not made my 'top 5' very many times in the past. Maybe it's because it brings back memories of my high school gym which was literally covered in bright orange paint from floor to ceiling (opposing teams would even complain that they were distracted by the obnoxious hue). It so happens that during my freshman year navy blue was added to our school colors as an accent color; even though it was only meant to play a supporting role everything instantly became navy blue...club t-shirts, team uniforms...basically any school paraphernalia you can think of. But it didn't take long to have a change of heart and by senior year we started to own the color we thought we despised so much and the new trend became 'the more orange the better.'
Color trends are always changing (that is why they are called 'trends'); we see these trends everywhere...in interior design, product design and in fashion. Pantone is a leading influence in deciding what these new color trends will be. This year they have announced their Pantone 2012 Color of the Year to be (drumroll please!) "Tangerine Tango 17-1463," which they describe on their webpage as a "vivacious and appealing reddish orange color." Just as it happened to me in high school society goes though cycles of trending colors; looking back a few years we find another shade of orange as Pantone's 2004 Color of the Year ("Tigerlilly 17-1456"). So if orange didn't make your 'top 5' this time, maybe it'll make your list the next time around?
